CoachCian Privacy Policy

Last updated 14 June 2026

CoachCian is a personal running coach for iPhone and Apple Watch. This policy explains what data the app uses and where it goes. The short version: your data stays on your device by default, there is no account or login, we never sell your data, we never use it for advertising, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.

At a glance

Who we are

CoachCian ("the app", "we") is developed and operated by an independent developer. For any privacy question or request, contact coachciansupport@gmail.com.

Data stored on your device

By default CoachCian keeps your data locally on your device (Apple's on-device database). This includes your training plan, recorded runs, routes, run history, fuelling logs, achievements and settings. This data is not sent to us or to any server unless you turn on one of the optional features described below. Deleting the app removes this local data.

Apple Health (HealthKit)

Location

Optional features that send data off your device

Each of the following is off by default and only sends data when you choose to use it.

iCloud backup (default off)

If you enable it, your runs, routes and plans are backed up to your own private iCloud Drive so they survive a new phone. Heart-rate and power data are stripped before backup — only fitness/location/plan data is stored. This uses your Apple iCloud account; we have no access to it.

Friends (default off, uses your iCloud)

The optional Friends feature uses Apple CloudKit (your own iCloud account) — there is no third-party server and no separate login. You add friends by a short code or QR scan and can compare exploration territory and activity. Shares are read-only and contain no health data.

Route share links (default off)

When you choose to share a route, the app publishes it to our backend (Supabase) and gives you an unguessable link that opens a read-only map in any browser. The link carries no personal information beyond a route name you choose, and it expires. Database access is locked down so links cannot be scraped.

Live safety sharing (default off)

If you enable it, a message to your chosen safety contact at run start can include a temporary live-tracking link showing your live position, pace and distance, plus a "finished safely" banner. The link expires (default 6 hours). Heart rate is never shared on this link — location, pace and distance only.

Strava (default off, you connect it)

If you connect Strava, CoachCian uploads your own completed runs to your own Strava account and can read your gear/activities, using standard OAuth. You authorize it and can disconnect at any time. We do not share your data with any third party beyond Strava itself.

Meal-photo calorie estimate (default off, you take the photo)

If you use the "snap a meal" feature, the photo you take is sent to a third-party AI vision service to estimate calories and macronutrients. By default this is Groq; if you add your own Anthropic (Claude) API key in Settings, it is used instead. The photo is sent only to produce the estimate; the resulting numbers are stored on your device. Do not photograph anything you do not want processed by that service.

AI coaching suggestions (optional)

Some optional coaching features send summarised training context (such as recent training load, upcoming workout and goals) to an AI service — Groq and/or Anthropic (Claude) — to generate a coaching suggestion. This context does not include your name or contact details.

Weather

To adjust pacing and brief you on conditions, the app sends your run's coarse location to Open-Meteo to fetch a forecast. No personal identifiers are sent.

Voice journal (optional, Microphone)

You can record a short post-run voice memo. It is transcribed using Apple's on-device Speech Recognition framework, and the recording and transcript are stored locally on your device.

Contacts (optional)

If you set up a safety contact, the app accesses Contacts only to let you pick that person. The selection stays on your device.

Notifications (optional)

If you allow them, the app sends local reminders for planned workouts and a pre-run weather/gear notification. These are scheduled on your device.

Third-party services

Depending on which optional features you use, data may be processed by the following services, each under its own privacy policy:

Data retention

On-device data stays until you delete it or delete the app. Optional iCloud backups stay in your iCloud until overwritten or removed. Share and live-safety links expire automatically. Data sent to an AI service for an estimate is handled under that provider's policy.

Your choices and deletion

Children

CoachCian is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Security

All network connections use standard encrypted HTTPS/TLS. The keys that can write to our backend are held on the server, not shipped in the app, and the database denies anonymous access.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, note it in the app.
